NUI Galway make it look easy despite hail, rain and wind

NUI Galway 3-15 IT Sligo 1-6

NUI Galway will play wither UCC or Garda College in Round 2 of the Sigerson Cup as first-half goals from Damien Comer and Brian Donovan set them on the road to an easy win over IT Sligo, writes Declan Rooney.

With hail, rain and wind battering the Dangan venue, it was a surprise to see any attractive football, but the home side battled the conditions and thanks to powerful performances from Gerard O’Kelly Lynch, Peter Cooke and Owen Gallagher they eased to victory.

Comer’s goal after four minutes quenched any early IT Sligo hope after Liam Gaughan and Robbie Smyth had pointed inside two minutes, but Owen Gallagher, Enda Tierney and Cooke all slotted points to put NUI Galway 1-3 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes.

A strong defensive line from IT Sligo saw the hosts frustrated at times in the first-half, but after Sean Kelly and Céin D’Arcy points, Donovan hit the net on the back of O’Kelly Lynch’s break to put NUI Galway 2-6 to 0-4 up at half-time.

A Smyth free suggested there might be some rally from IT Sligo in the second-half but after that 32nd minute point they were starved of scored until seven minutes from time.

With Cooke accurate from placed balls NUI Galway easily kept their led accumulating, while a flowing move involving Cooke, Owen Gallagher, Comer and Donovan was finished to the net by Tierney to seal the victory nine minutes from time.
