One-sided competition as the Déise swept away

Tipperary 1-24 Waterford 0-5

Eoghan Cormican, Semple Stadium

Tipperary delivered a polished and confident performance to comfortably brush aside the challenge of Waterford in this one-sided Munster SFC quarter-final contest.

Tipperary’s stock, on the basis of this afternoon’s showing, continues to rise and while tougher tests lie ahead – Kerry travel to Thurles for the Munster semi-final on June 14 – they couldn't have done much more in this opening championship bout.

The home outfit returned to the dressing room at half-time safe in the knowledge they would be welcoming the All-Ireland champions to Semple Stadium in a fortnight’s time, 1-13 to 0-3 they led.

The winners kicked the first six scores of the game – Conor Sweeney, Steven O’Brien (0-3), Philip Austin and Ger Mulhaire on target.

Michael O’Halloran landed Waterford’s first score after 12 minutes and his two-point contribution marked Waterford’s only scores from open play in the entire first period.

Michael Quinlivan swatted three on the trot thereafter, the full-forward pouncing for the opening goal of the contest on 24 minutes. Conor Sweeney’s free came down off the post and Quinlivan reacted quickest in punching to the net. The score moved the home side 1-10 to 0-2 in front and the gap was further stretched approaching the break – Sweeney (0-2) and Philip Austin increasing their individual tallies.

There was no let-up from the winners in the second period, Peter Acheson, O’Brien, Austin, Seamus Kennedy and George Hannigan stringing five unanswered points.

Shane Briggs ended an 18-minute spell when registering the visitor’s first score of the second period. Matters improved little for the Déise in the final quarter, they added to their tally only once more as they fell by 21–points.
