Cork breeze through on second attempt

Cork 0-28 Waterford 0-14

Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s Cork eased through to the Munster SHC semi-final with a landslide victory over Waterford in this afternoon’s quarter- final replay at Semple Stadium.

The Rebels scored 0-14 in each half to romp to a comfortable win against a Waterford side that lost former All Star defender Noel Connors to injury in the fifth minute.

At half-time, Cork were 0-14 to 0-5 clear and could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty.

Just before the break, Pa Cronin was fouled but Anthony Nash was denied from the resultant penalty by his opposite number Stephen O’Keeffe, who came steaming from his line to meet Nash at the point of contact.

The Kanturk netminder argued with referee Johnny Ryan that a retake should have been awarded but Cork did gain some reward as Bill Cooper whipped the loose ball over the crossbar.

The expectation was that Cork would improve considerably from the drawn encounter a fortnight ago and so it proved.

Waterford were nine points up during the second half on that occasion but it was a much different story today, in front of 22,093 spectators.

Waterford were far more subdued against a Cork side hurling with far greater intensity and intent.

Ten of their players got on the scoresheet and by half-time, five of Cork’s six starting forwards had registered scores from play, Cronin proving the exception.

And there was further cheer for Cork fans during the second half when Paudie O’Sullivan marked his return from an horrific leg break sustained last year with two points from play.

Fellow subs Stephen Moylan and Rob O’Shea were also on target as Cork simply kept the scoreboard ticking over during the second half.

Pat Horgan led the way in the scoring stakes with ten points in total but there were also decent performances from Conor Lehane, Seamus Harnedy and Bill Cooper up front.

Defensively, Cork put the shackles on Waterford dangermen Pauric Mahony and Austin Gleeson.

And while Gleeson, goal hero from the drawn fixture, did escape for three points from play, the end result was never in doubt by then.

Cork’s victory has set up a mouth-watering Munster SHC semi-final against Clare at Semple Stadium next Sunday.

That fixture is, of course, a repeat of the classic All-Ireland finals between the sides last year.

Cork will be itching for revenge for that September defeat but Clare will be looking to avenge their provincial defeat at the hands of the Rebels in 2013.
