O'Donoghue guides Kerry to win over Kildare

Kildare 0-15 Kerry 2-15, Newbridge

James O'Donoghue's star continues to rise after he guided Kerry to a crucial Allianz Football League win away to Kildare this afternoon.

A week on from scoring 3-3 in the Kingdom's first victory of their Division 1 campaign, O'Donoghue led the way again as he shot 1-5 in downing the Lilywhites.

The result has further eased the Munster giants' relegation concerns after they lost their opening three league games, but Kildare sit second-from-bottom with four defeats in five outings.

Kerry, who are sixth in the table on four points, had to cope with a business-like start from Kildare with Paddy Brophy, Eoghan O'Flaherty and Cathal McNally on target.

The visitors got up and running soon after and a run of scores from O'Donoghue, Bryan Sheehan, Paul Geaney, Daithi Casey and Stephen O'Brien had them ahead, before Brophy got away from his marker Marc Ó Sé to land a quick brace and make it 0-5 apiece.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice's men found an extra gear though as they dominated possession. The lively O'Donoghue, O'Brien and Sheehan - with a tremendous free from the left wing - landed three more points.

Then O'Donoghue turned provider, chipping the ball cleverly across for Geaney to fist home his 26th minute goal.

Kildare responded with white flags from O'Flaherty and Darroch Mulhall, but Kerry were looking strong and a point from wing back Paul Murphy gave them a 1-10 to 0-9 lead to take into the second half.

The Munster champions put the result beyond doubt in the third quarter, which began in exciting fashion as O'Donoghue and Kildare substitute Padraig Fogarty both had goal efforts cleared off the line.

The in-form O'Donoghue did get the goal he craved in the 55th minute, smacking home a low right-footed shot after creating space for himself with a neat dummy.

Kildare had managed to pare the gap back to four points but a run of points from Casey and O'Donoghue, coupled with the latter's goal, widened the margin to nine.

There was still some fight in the hosts as substitute Mikey Conway, Tomas O'Connor and Mulhall registering late white flags.

However, Kildare were unable to trouble Kerry stopper Brian Kelly and the Kingdom's strong bench proved very effective in the closing stages, with Darran O'Sullivan, Kieran O'Leary, Johnny Buckley, Barry John Keane and Aidan O'Mahony all coming on.
