Cork midfielder O'Connor retires

2010 All-Ireland SFC winning midfielder Alan O'Connor has decided to end his involvement with the Cork senior footballers.

O'Connor's retirement was confirmed this evening on the Cork GAA website, with the 28-year-old bowing out after five years at senior inter-county level.

The St. Colum's clubman won two All-Ireland JFC titles and three Munster Under-21 crowns before helping the Rebels lift the Sam Maguire Cup for the first time since 1990.

O'Connor, who grew up in Dublin before moving to Cork with his family when he was 13, also won three Allianz League titles and three Munster Senior Championships with Cork and an Interprovincial Championship with Munster.

In announcing his decision to retire, he thanked his former team-mates and the management and coaches he has worked with, expressing his gratitude for their support and encouragement over the years.

A short statement from Cork GAA read: "We wish Alan well with his future plans, and thank him for his service and dedication to Cork football."

O'Connor is the latest member of Cork's 2010 All-Ireland winning side to retire - half-backs Graham Canty, Paudie Kissane and Noel O'Leary have all hung up their boots in recent weeks along with goalkeeper Alan Quirke and half-forward Pearse O'Neill.

Another absentee for Brian Cuthbert's first season in charge of the Rebels is influential attacker Ciaran Sheehan, who has taken up an offer to play for Australian Rules club Carlton Blues.

Cuthbert has recalled 2010 All-Ireland winners, Ray Carey and John Hayes, to the panel for winter training, while six Under-21 players are also training with the 33-man provisional squad, among them Eoin Cadogan's younger brother Alan and Dan MacEoin.

Jamie O'Sullivan, Damien Cahalane, Paddy Kelly and Colm O'Neill remain absent as they recover from their respective injuries.

CORK SF Training Panel: M Shields (capt), K O'Halloran, D Hanrahan, T Clancy (Fermoy), J McLoughlin, R Carey, E Cadogan, A Cronin, J Loughrey, A Sheehan, J Hayes, T Clancy, E Keane, K Canty, K O'Driscoll, A Walsh, F Goold, D Goulding, B Hurley, P Kerrigan, M Collins, B O'Driscoll, A O'Sullivan, J O'Rourke, C O'Driscoll, D O'Connor, D Óg Hodnett.
