Former Dublin star brought in as Wicklow selector

Former Dublin player Johnny Magee will be part of the Wicklow senior football management team for the 2014 season, coming on board as a selector.

Magee captained his club Kilmacud Crokes to an All-Ireland senior title in 2009, having played as a half-back and midfielder for Dublin for a ten-year period up to 2007.

The 35-year-old won two Leinster Championship medals and an O'Byrne Cup during his inter-county playing days, and Wicklow manager Harry Murphy will be hoping Magee's experience can help the county turn a corner after a disappointing 2013 campaign.

In what was Murphy's second season in charge, Wicklow were relegated from Division 3 of the Allianz League in the spring and although they beat Longford in the Leinster Championship, Murphy's men crashed out of the All-Ireland qualifiers in June on the back of a humiliating 2-21 to 0-2 loss to Armagh.

But a recently established 'guidance group' has been put in place, which includes current Wicklow player Patrick McWalter, with the Garden county targeting Leinster titles at minor, Under-21 and senior level over the next ten years.

The availability again of Wicklow's talisman Leighton Glynn will also be a considerably boost for next season, with the Ireland International Rules player recently making his return with club side Rathnew following a 15-month lay-off from a broken ankle and three operations.

Meanwhile, Magee will not be the only newcomer to the Wicklow set-up in 2014 as Ronan Carroll has been installed as a strength and conditioning coach for the panel.

It is a change of codes for Carroll as he comes from a wide-ranging rugby background which includes coaching experience with Leinster, Bradford Bulls and more recently Greystones RFC.
