Waterford nomination is news to DJ
Kilkenny legend DJ Carey has admitted today that he was unaware of his reported nomination for the position of Waterford senior hurling manager.
The Irish Examiner reported that Carey will be put forward as one of the nominees for the role at a Waterford County Board meeting tonight.
Outgoing manager Michael Ryan, former county selector Paraic Fanning and De La Salle's Derek McGrath are also understood to be in the running.
However, Carey has since dismissed the speculation linking him with the Déise job, telling local radio station KCLR 96FM that it is 'news to him'.
The 42-year-old from Gowran won five All-Ireland titles and nine All-Stars with Kilkenny and was Hurler of the Year in 1993 and 2000. He retired from inter-county hurling in 2005.
He recently returned to playing for Young Irelands' junior side following a spell of injury and illness.
He was their trainer last year and when they were short of numbers early in the summer, he stepped in and actually had his teenage son Seán for company in attack.
Carey, whose autobiography is due out shortly, was previously linked with the Dublin manager's position in 2008 before Anthony Daly was appointed.
The former Cats forward said at the time: "I haven't been asked and I don't want to be asked because I have no interest in management. Anybody that would know me would know I have no interest in management."
Meanwhile, a six-man committee has been put in place to interview the Waterford nominees and then recommend the new manager who will be given a three-year term by the County Board.
There are four board members on the committee - chairman Tom Cunningham, secretary Timmy O'Keeffe, treasurer Joe Cleary and vice-chairman John O'Leary - along with two former Waterford players, James Murray and Stephen Frampton.
