Semis await as Tribeswomen batter Tyrone

Galway 2-20 Tyrone 2-05

Galway sent out a warning message to their rivals with a resounding victory over an out-classed Tyrone in the All-Ireland quarter-final at Breffni Park.

The winners got off to a perfect start when Ger Conneally pounced on a mistake in the Tyrone defence and sent the ball to the top corner of the net and when Tracey Leonard added a point, they were four up within two minutes.

Tyrone never recovered and even though they pulled back a point through the pacy Cathy Donnelly, Galway, with Annette Clarke in sparkling form at midfield, dominated the remainder of the half.

The Red Hand girls were unable to get past midfield as the Tribeswomen piled on the pressure, moving the ball at pace and dominating the physical battle.

Points from Edel Concannon (free), Rebecca McPhilbin, captain Sinéad Burke, Clarke, Concannon again, Clarke again, Barbara Hannon (two) and yet another from Clarke made it 1-10 to 0-1 after 25 minutes and although Lycrecia Quinn replied with a super point for Tyrone, Concannon's third left Galway 1-11 to 0-2 ahead at the break.

It could have been worse, too – Galway kicked eight first-half wides to Tyrone's one and th Connacht side picked up where they left off after the break, with Clarke opening the scoring and Concannon quickly adding another.

Neamh Woods hit back for Tyrone after Galway's Emer Flaherty was sin-binned but it made little difference as Clarke (with her fifth from play), Roisin Leonard and Lorna Joyce extended Galway's lead to 1-17 to 0-3 by the 42-minute mark.

Niamh O'Neill hit back with an excellent goal for Tyrone but a 40-metre free from the ground from Leonard was followed by a fabulous goal from Joyce as Galway moved through the gears.

An Emma Hegarty point stemmed the tide but but scores from sub Gillian O'Connor and Hannon opened an 18-point gap.

Tyrone's Catriona McGahan palmed the ball to the net for a goal but it was too little, too late as the Tribeswomen marched on in style.
