Derek McNicholas tallied up 12 points for Westmeath as they claimed their second win in Allianz Hurling League Division 2A with a 2-18 to 2-15 success over Laois at Cusack Park this afternoon.

Laois led by 0-9 to 0-7 at half-time, with Matthew Whelan, Willie Hyland, Brian Dunne, Neil Foyle, Stephen Maher and Joe Fitzpatrick on target for the visitors in the opening half.

John Shaw, McNicholas, Eoin Price and Niall O'Brien kept the Lake County in touch, but Laois further extended their lead on the restart in Mullingar.

A Tommy Fitzgerald goal helped Laois take a a 1-10 to 0-9 lead, the three-pointer coming as a result of a '65' which was dropped in by Whelan and then batted down by Conor Jordan, before Fitzgerald pounced to send the ball to the Westmeath net.

The hosts failed to give up, with Laois dealt a major blow following a red card for James Walsh with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Laois bagged a second goal from Charlie Dwyer, but Westmeath finished strongly as goals from O'Brien and Price helped the Lakesiders take the spoils.
