Armagh's Clarke decides to stay in Ireland

Armagh sharpshooter Jamie Clarke has shelved his plans to travel abroad and will be part of Paul Grimley's plans for his first season as manager of the Orchard men.

Clarke was due to go travelling following the completion of Crossmaglen Rangers' tilt at a third straight AIB All-Ireland Club Senior Football Championship title.

He was expected to fulfill a desire to travel in March with South America and New York among the likely destinations, but the talented forward has since had a change of heart.

Clarke, an All-Star nominee last year, will be available for part of Armagh's Allianz League run as they bid to recover from relegation last season.

Having helped Crossmaglen retain their All-Ireland crown, he returned to county duty last April but was unable to inspire Armagh to victory in a crucial final round clash away to Donegal.

He then scored 1-9 in their two Championship defeats to Tyrone and Roscommon, and is clearly set on play a leading role for the Ulster outfit this summer.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Armagh boss Grimley confirmed Clarke's availability and explained that the player is taking up a position within the county that will make him 'the public face of all that is good about Armagh football'.

"Jamie has got his degree and will be settling into his new role. It will be a terrific shot in the arm for Armagh football to have him working here. He has so much to offer," he said.

"I must say I am delighted to have all the Crossmaglen Rangers county panellists in the dressing room at this point in time.

"This shows their commitment to the county. They may not be starting games for the county but their loyalty is admirable and naturally we would like to have them out there playing for us as soon as is feasible."

Grimley's first competitive match in charge saw Armagh go down to Cavan - 3-9 to 1-11 - in the Dr. McKenna Cup last Saturday. Seven newcomers started that game at the Athletic Grounds.

There has been a considerable squad overhaul with players such as Andy Mallon, Malachy Mackin, Billy Joe Padden and Anto Duffy all being axed.

Cullyhanna's Ciaran McKeever has been reappointed as captain of the new-look Orchard panel, with Clarke's Crossmaglen club-mate Aaron Kernan the new vice captain.
