Mulligan to captain Leitrim

Talismanic forward Emlyn Mulligan has been appointed as captain of the Leitrim senior footballers for 2013.

Joint-managers Barney Breen and George Dugdale have handed the captaincy reins to Mulligan, whose 0-24 haul saw him finish as the eighth top scorer in last year's All-Ireland Championship.

The Kinlough native, who works as a Garda, starred with a six-point contribution in Leitrim's historic first ever All-Ireland qualifier victory over Wicklow in mid-July.

Mulligan also helped his club Melvin Gaels win the Leitrim senior football title, landing three points as they beat reigning champions Glencar/Manorhamilton in the October decider. He has transferred to Dublin club St. Brigid's for 2013.

He played in Leitrim's seasonal opener against Roscommon last Sunday as they got their FBD League campaign off to a winning start in Elphin - 0-6 to 0-5.

Mulligan, who has battled back from two cruciate knee ligament injuries in recent years, came on as a substitute to kick two crucial points.

The 24-year-old tweeted after the game: "Great to get first win of 2013. Also honoured to be named Leitrim captain for 2013! Here's to a successful and injury free year."
