Allianz Football League Division 2: Galway 1-8 Louth 0-11
Louth stormed back to claim a share of the spoils in Salthill, but might have emerged as late winners of this Division 2 duel.
Their captain Paddy Keenan missed two ‘45s in the dying minutes as Galway, who had dominated early on, were left hanging on for a draw.
Danny Cummins notched a 13th minute goal for the hosts who also had early points from Cummins, Nicky Joyce, Michael Martin and Thomas Flynn.
Louth had taken a first minute lead through the influential Darren Clarke and Galway had to wait until the ninth minute for their opening score from young forward Martin.
The throw-in of this game was delayed by 15 minutes due to the late arrival of the Kilkenny hurlers at the venue for the earlier Walsh Cup final against Galway.
The Galway footballers were finally up to speed after Cummins' opportunist goal. Paul Conroy's point attempt came back off a post and Cummins were well-placed to send a rising shot past goalkeeper Neil Gallagher and into the net.
But with Clarke (0-3) and Keenan finding their range, Galway’s lead was cut to 1-6 to 0-7 by half-time with a purple patch of scoring from Louth who landed five points in eight minutes.
The visitors seized control with points from Andy McDonnell and Adrian Reid helping them get back on terms.
With some key substitutes adding energy to Louth's charge, the newly-introduced Eoin O'Connor replied to a Conroy score to level the sides for a third time.
Garreth Bradshaw nudged Galway ahead again in the 63rd minute, however Alan Mulholland's new-look side could not hold onto the lead and substitute Jim McEneaney's levelling point from a difficult angle proved to be the final score of an entertaining tussle.
