Former inter-county player Des Newton was ratified as the new manager of the Roscommon senior footballers last night, succeeding the departed Fergal O'Donnell.
His appointment was confirmed following a meeting of the Roscommon County Board. They have given Newton, a Dublin-based school principal, a two-year term.
During his playing days, he won All-Ireland U-21 and Connacht SFC honours with Roscommon and was an Ulster SFC winner with his adopted county Donegal.
In more recent years, Newton has added to his managerial credentials with stints with a number of county Development squads and club sides, including Dublin outfit Kilmacud Crokes.
There has been no official announcement of his backroom team with Roscommon, but former All-Star defender Enon Gavin is expected to be one of his selectors.
Meanwhile, Nigel Dineen, another provincial medal winner with the Roscommon seniors, has been installed as the county's new U-21 football boss.
Succeeding Jimmy Gacquin in the role, the former forward's selectors will be Eddie Lohan, Basil Mannion and Denis Gavin. Like Newton, Dineen has also been handed a two-year term.
