Waterford junior camogie stars win championship

Waterford 2-11 Down 1-13

Waterford 2-11 Down 1-13

Waterford completed a season to remember today by adding the All-Ireland premier junior camogie championship to the Division 2 league title garnered earlier this season.

It was an especially sweet success for the Déise as they had fallen at the final hurdle in the last two seasons.

It looked like they were set fair for a comfortable success on this occasion as they led by 11 points entering the final quarter but a gallant Down produced a remarkable comeback to almost deny them.

Goals from Ruth Geoghegan and Karen Kelly helped the Suirsiders into a 2-8 to 0-5 interval lead. Geoghegan was also unlucky to see a rasper bounce off the upright as Waterford took charge approaching half time, while Niamh Rockett also drove a shot over off the top of the crossbar.

That margin was 11 points by the 42nd minute, as Kelly and Trish Jackman added points but a spirit Down chipped away.

Catherine McGourty and the electric Niamh Mallon were amongst the scorers as the Ulster side shot eight points in succession but Rockett ended a 17 minute scoreless period to put four between them with a minute remaining.

That was to prove crucial as Down substitute Nicola Braniff goaled seven seconds into injury time but Waterford were able to hang on to complete a famous league and championship double.
