Macauley suffers foot injury

The participation of midfielder Michael Darragh Macauley in Dublin's Leinster SFC semi-final against Kildare next Sunday is in some doubt.

The participation of midfielder Michael Darragh Macauley in Dublin's Leinster SFC semi-final against Kildare next Sunday is in some doubt.

Manager Pat Gilroy explained: "Michael has a problem with his foot, it's swollen. We don't know what it is just yet as it only showed up on Friday.

"He can't remember getting a knock on it and we got it X-rayed but nothing showed up on that. Hopefully it will settle down by the weekend."

The injury forced Macauley, a 2010 All-Star nominee, to sit out the Dublin Blues v Whites challenge match at St. Anne's last Saturday.

Bernard Brogan top-scored with 1-3 for the Blues side in a 2-19 to 2-17 win, while newcomer Micheál McCarthy from St. Sylvester's finished with an impressive haul of 2-6 for the Whites.

If Macauley is unavailable for the Kildare game, Gilroy may opt to bring Eamon Fennell or Ross McConnell into the starting line-up.

McConnell, who like Fennell has had a hip problem, replaced Macauley in the closing minutes of the Dubs' recent quarter-final win over Laois.

Fennell started alongside Denis Bastic in the Blues' midfield for last weekend's challenge game, while McConnell manned the Whites' engineroom along with Barry Cahill.

"Eamon and Ross had a good battle between them. They're both still a little bit off the full 70 minutes but the two of them have made great progress over the last three weeks," revealed Gilroy.

"We mightn't have expected them to be as far down the line as this but they've worked very hard and they've put themselves into contention.

"You wouldn't get a full game from either of them but you could definitely get a good stretch out of them and increases our options all the time."
