Former Kildare footballer Niall Browne will make his Munster SFC debut when he lines out for Clare against Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday (throw-in 3.30pm).

Browne qualifies to play for Clare under the parentage rule, as his mother Nancy hails from Cooraclare.

He will team up with Gary Brennan at midfield for the provincial tie.

Gordon Kelly from St Joseph's Miltown will captain the Banner men from centre-back, with Barry Duggan from Cratloe named at full-back.

Much of Clare's scoring threat is carried by centre forward David Tubridy. The Doonbeg clubman regularly leads the scoring for Michael McDermott's charges. His half-forward colleague Graham Kelly scored Clare's goal in their recent challenge match win over Sligo.

Clare lost to Waterford in the opening round of last year's Munster Championship and fell at the first hurdle in the All-Ireland qualifiers, going down 2-18 to 1-18 to Offaly after extra-time.

If they are to repeat the county's famous 1997 Championship win over Cork, midfielder Gary Brennan knows that a strong start will be crucial this weekend.

"In any game, you're looking to try and get on the front foot. Hopefully we can just settle down early and maybe get a few scores on the board and stay competitive in the first few minutes," he told the Clare Champion.

"I'm sure Cork will be hoping to blitz us early on but we've got to try and take the game to them.

"There's no point in sitting and waiting for them to come at you. They're the All-Ireland champions. They'll do that anyway. We've got to go at them."

CLARE (SFC v Cork): Joe Hayes; Kevin Hartnett, Barry Duggan, Laurence Healy; John Hayes, Gordon Kelly (capt), Martin McMahon; Niall Browne, Gary Brennan; Graham Kelly, David Tubridy, Cathal O'Connor; Rory Donnelly, Darren O'Neill, Alan Clohessy.
