Young Dubs rolled over by Meath

Reigning Cadbury All-Ireland Under-21 Football champions Dublin fell at the first hurdle as Meath claimed an extra-time win at Pairc Tailteann tonight.

Extra-time points from Shane Gillespie, Darragh Smith, Willie Carry and Seanie Dalton helped the Royals to a 0-21 to 0-17 victory.

Meath cruised to a 0-10 to 0-05 interval lead in normal time, with Michael Newman and Paddy Gilsenan doing most damage.

However, Dublin's fortunes gradually improved with Dean Rock, Paul Hudson and Philip Ryan impressive. Scores from Darragh Nelson and Kevin O'Brien gave Dublin a late lead.

Meath bounced back with points from Andrew Tormey and Newman deep into injury-time to force extra-time.

The Royals led by 0-18 to 0-16 at half-time in extra-time, and held Dublin to just a point on the restart as they booked a Leinster quarter-final berth against Longford.

At IT Carlow, a brace of first half goals from Eddie Byrne helped Carlow to a 2-14 to 0-12 success over Wicklow.

Carlow led by 2-7 to 0--5 at half-time, despite being reduced to 14 men at the end of the opening quarter. There was a second yellow card for Murtagh Ware.

Wexford will face Kildare in the quarter-finals after edging past Louth on a 1-15 to 2-08 scoreline at Enniscorthy.

A Conor Carty goal steered Wexford towards a 1-10 to 0-04 half-time lead.

Jim McEnaney, son of Monaghan manager Eamon, slotted home two penalties for the visitors. However, Wexford stood firm thanks to the efforts of Kevin O'Grady and Michael O'Regan.

Meanwhile, seven players were on target for Westmeath in their 1-15 to 1-05 win over Laois at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise.

Conor Lynam top-scored for Westmeath with five points, in a game which saw Pat Flanagan's charges hold the lead from the sixth minute onwards.

Westmeath were 1-06 to 0-03 ahead at half-time, aided by Ian Coffey's penalty goal. Barry Kelly netted for Laois on the restart, but his green flag came too late for the hosts.
