FBD League round-up

Galway and NUI Galway were the only winners on the opening day of action in Connacht's FBD League, with only two of the four scheduled matches taking place.

At Enniscrone, new manager Tomas O Flatharta made a winning start to his Galway reign as the visitors claimed a hard-earned 2-9 to 1-10 victory over Sligo.

Sligo motored into a 1-5 to 0-2 half-time lead, aided by Tony Taylor's goal. But the Tribesmen found another gear on the restart with Sean Armstrong leading the charge.

The Salthill-Knocknacarra clubman was in tremendous form and scored both of Galway's second half goals as they ran out two-point winners.

Armstrong finished with a tally of 2-3, with Taylor, Pat Hughes, Francis Quinn and Paul McGovern the leading lights for the hosts.

Meanwhile, a late point from substitute Fiachra Deasmuinaigh steered NUI Galway to a 0-11 to 0-10 win over IT Sligo at Dangan.

The sides were tied at 0-6 apiece at the end of a keenly-contesting opening half. IT Sligo opened up a 0-10 to 0-8 lead with five minutes remaining, but NUIG landed three late points, including Deasmuinaigh's winner in injury-time.

Jason Doherty top-scored with six points for the winners, all from placed balls, while Neil Douglas (0-3, 0-2f), Cian Mimnagh and Deasmuinaigh (0-1 each) were the other scorers.

Gary White picked off five points for IT Sligo, with Adrian Croal, Eugene Keating and Donnacha Gallagher also getting on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, the Mayo v Leitrim tie at Ballyhaunis and the Roscommon v GMIT clash at Ballyforan were both called off.

Mayo's game against Leitrim was a late postponement, following an agreement between the opposing managers and the referee. It had been deemed that certain areas of the pitch were too hard.

A decision on the re-fixtures will be made by the Connacht Council tomorrow morning.
