Meehan to captain Galway team

The Galway team to play Sligo in tomorrow's Connacht SFC semi-final replay at Markievicz Park (throw-in 6pm) has been confirmed, with fit-again forward Michael Meehan captaining the side.

Despite having his right knee heavily strapped, Meehan made his presence felt in the second half of the drawn game in Salthill. He was fouled for the levelling free in injury-time which Garrett Bradshaw converted to produce a 1-10 to 1-10 stalemate.

In the only change manager Joe Kernan has made to his starting line-up, Meehan will start the replay at right corner forward, coming in as an indirect replacement for Paul Conroy.

Conroy's place at midfield has been taken by Joe Bergin who had a roaming role in last Sunday's game, popping up at centre-field, in the half-forwards and at full-forward.

This is the fifth Championship replay between the counties, with Galway winning all four previous clashes - three of which were in the 1990s.

Hoping the Tribesmen can raise their game, Kernan said: "Our performance (last Sunday) was poor and there is no hiding from that. We're still in the Championship, we didn't play well, we got out of jail, but we didn't throw the towel in.

"But a lot of it is down to playing regularly. We had 12 or 14 boys coming back from injury over the last three or four months.

"You need match time and certainly that match will bring us on. If we left (Salthill) beaten and threw the towel in with 15 minutes to go, you are going nowhere. They are still fighting, these boys."

GALWAY (SFC v Sligo): A Faherty; K Fitzgerald, F Hanley, A Burke; G Bradshaw, D Blake, G O'Donnell; N Coleman, J Bergin; G Sice, S Armstrong, M Clancy; M Meehan (capt), P Joyce, E Concannon.
