Sligo and Wexford take the spoils in Division 3

Fermanagh 1-11 Sligo 3-15

Sligo moved level on points with Wexford and joint second place in Division 3 of the NFL after a gutsy display to see off the challenge of Fermanagh at Brewster Park.

In the end the winning margin of ten points is probably a little flattering as both sides were level for long periods but the third goal from Alan Costelloe on 59 minutes settled the issue.

At that stage they led 3-11 to 1-10 and even though there was still time for a Fermanagh recovery, the Sligo men finished the stronger and added late points through Kenneth Sweeney, Colm McGee and Mark Breheny.

The Connaght side started very promisingly and were 1-9 to five points in front by half-time after corner forward Charlie Harrison goaled after 23 minutes. McGee had four points in a good opening period by him while centre-forward Alan Costelloe continued his good form with a couple of his own.

For Fermanagh, they were a bit too reliant on talismanic forward Rory Gallagher who accounted for three of his sides opening first half tally.

They did start the second-period much better and after Tommy McIlroy thumped home a penalty the prospect of a quality game was in store. Michael Bradley brought four points between them with a free on 52 minutes but then came Sligo’s second goal through Colm McGee.

Costelloe netted their third on 52 minutes and even though Gallagher continued to do the damage, on his own, Sligo held on and rounded a good day’s work off with three late points.

Roscommon 1-9 Wexford 1-12

Roscommon are relegated from Division 3 of the National Football League after going down to Wexford by three points at home this afternoon.

The Rossies’ led by a point with two minutes to go and it looked as if they had given themselves a chance at avoiding the drop but the concession of a late flurry of scores resigned them to the drop.

They led at the break by seven points to six after good spells by Donie Shine and John Rogers in attack. However, as soon as Wexford introduced Colm Morris, PJ Banville and Redmond Barry the Model County’s fortunes changed.

Roscommon, with just one win from five looked like they were on course for just their second won when trailing 11 points to 0-9 with five minutes remaining they pounced for a goal against the run of play.

A high ball from Shine into the square was palmed away off the line but quickest to react was Cathal McHugh who blasted home from close range.

However, the lead lasted barely 60 seconds when Wexford drew level in the next attack before they lashed home a well taken goal in stoppage time to seal the win and put them into second place in the table, level on points with Sligo.
