UL 3-22 LIT 2-18, LIT Grounds (after extra-time)

A spectacular goal by Joe Canning with the last puck of normal time brought this exciting Waterford Crystal Cup quarter-final tie to extra-time at the LIT Grounds.

The Galway star finished as he began as he also had the opening point and then a goal after only three minutes to have LIT in front by 1-2 to 0-0.

But Canning was outshone on the day by UL's Tipperary tyro Willie Ryan, who scored ten points - four from frees - to fire his side to a 3-22 to 2-18 win and a place in next Sunday's semi-finals.

After a poor start, gradually UL found their range and by half-time LIT led by only two points - 1-8 to 1-6 - with Thomas Connors getting the goal for UL.

The second half was a thrilling affair and the sides were level on two occasions inside the first ten minutes.

Three minutes from the end, substitute Andrew Finn had a second goal for UL and then came Canning's great strike after superb link play between Ronan Sherlock and Sean Collins to allow Canning set up extra-time.

But UL finished the stronger and a goal by another substitute, Michael Gleeson, had the visitors in front by 3-16 to 2-17 at the end of the first period of extra-time.

Two points by Brian Carroll clinched the win for UL and while Canning went for goal with the last free of the game, his effort was deflected over the bar for a point.

UL had outstanding players in Patrick Stapleton, Brian Carroll, and man-of-the-match Willie Ryan.

For LIT Canning was top scorer but they had other solid displays from Eamonn Gleeson, Nicky O'Connell, Paudie O'Brien and Seamus Callinan.
