Derry overcome Queens

Derry bounced back from their weekend defeat by Antrim to sweep past Queen's University in tonight's Barrett Sports Lighting Dr McKenna Cup Group C clash at Celtic Park.

Second half goals from Seamus Bradley (1-3), Joe Diver and Raymond Wilkinson steered the Oak Leafers to a comprehensive 4-16 to 1-7 victory.

Queen's, who disappointed against Down last weekend, took to their task early on and led by 0-3 to 0-0 thanks to points from free-taker Joe Ireland (2) and Cathal McGovern.

Derry boss Damien Cassidy will not have been too happy as he placed particularly emphasis on improving defensive matters after their opening Group C defeat by Antrim.

But Cassidy's men did immediately raise the tempo in defence and attack, putting together a run of five points without reply, before goals followed from Queen's Brian Cox and Derry attacker Kevin O'Neill, with a fisted effort.

Derry were 1-6 to 1-5 to the good at half-time and points from Fergal Doherty and Eoin Bradley saw the Belfast students struggling to stay in touch.

Eoin Bradley then set up quick-fire goals for namesake Seamus and Diver, and Wilkinson tagged on a fourth in injury-time to put a gloss on the final scoreline.
