Mary’s fightback to defeat Cavan

University side St. Mary's showed plenty of guts to come from behind and beat Cavan 1-12 to 1-8 at Kingspan Breffni Park.

The Belfast students were 1-5 to 0-6 behind at half-time courtesy of a penalty from Gareth 'Nesty' Smith, who has switched allegiances from Dublin to Cavan.

Smith, in only his second game for Cavan, converted a fourth minute penalty to push Tommy Carr's men into an early lead.

But the Dubliner was substituted at the break and while his replacement Mark McKeever was able to kick Cavan three points clear, St. Mary's produced a smashing finish.

They chipped away at the county outfit, with Antrim star Kevin Niblock tallying up 0-4 and an injury-time goal from Darren Gibson was the final nail in Cavan's coffin.
