Leinster Club SHC quarter-final:
Clonkill (Westmeath) 1-21 Clough-Ballacolla (Laois) 2-12
Westmeath champions Clonkill progressed through to the semi-finals of the AIB Leinster Club Senior Hurling Championship with a well-deserved 1-21 to 2-12 win over Laois side Clough-Ballacolla in Mullingar.
The Pat O'Toole-managed home side, playing in the senior provincial championship for the first time, came out on top at Cusack Park despite conceding second half goals to Kevin Keyes and Damien Bergin.
Clonkill won the toss and opted to play into the wind in the first half, establishing a 1-5 to 0-6 lead courtesy of a Brendan Murtagh goal.
Willie Hyland inspired Clough-Ballacolla's best spell in the second half as they briefly went ahead.
But the first-time Laois champions found stubborn resistance from Clonkill goalkeeper Brian Murray and his full-back line.
Murtagh was in excellent form from frees and Shane Power also chipped in with some vital scores as Clonkill ran out comfortable winners in the end.
They will face Offaly champions Tullamore at the same venue in two weeks’ time.
