Glenealy denied hat-trick of titles

Carnew Emmets claimed their first Wicklow SHC title since 2006, denying Glenealy a three in-a-row in the process thanks to a two-point win at Aughrim this afternoon.

Contesting their seventh final in succession, Glenealy were pushed to the pin of their collars throughout with a hungrier Emmets side emerging as deserved winners.

It was Carnew's ability to take their scores from open play which proved vital as they slotted over nine points from play - in contrast Glenealy could only manage 1-3 from play.

Glenealy began brightly and led by 1-1 to 0-2 early on thanks to a Jonathan O'Neill point and a Leighton Glynn goal.

Leighton combined with his brother Eanna before crashing the ball to the back of the Carnew net for the only goal of the hour.

However, Carnew bounced back strongly to hold a 0-13 to 1-5 half-time advantage with Don Hyland showing great accuracy, as O'Neill kept Glenealy in touch.

The second half continued to be a point-scoring shoot-out between Hyland (0-9) and O'Neill (0-10), with Vincent Flaherty and Thomas Doyle also on target.

But Carnew stood firm to take their 19th Wicklow SHC crown.
