O'Brien to remain in charge of Meath

Eamonn O'Brien has been given a one-year extension as Meath senior football manager after the Royals reached the recent All-Ireland SFC semi-finals.

Meath's summer run, which included victories over Waterford, Westmeath, Roscommon, Limerick and Mayo, was ended by a 2-8 to 1-7 defeat by Kerry at Croke Park last week.

A selector during the Sean Boylan era, O'Brien was appointed to the role last year and last night received the backing of the Meath County Board for another season with the option of a third.

Meath chairman Barney Allen said: "I would like to congratulate Eamonn and his management team for the work done.

"We have to set our eyes on the Leinster Championship next year - we need a trophy and that's the one we have our eyes on."

O'Brien will confirm his backroom staff for the 2010 campaign in the coming weeks. He worked with Robbie O'Malley and Donal Curtis as selectors and trainer Colm Brady in his first year in charge.

There was also good news for two other Meath managers last night.

Former county star Colm O'Rourke has been reappointed as Meath Under-21 football manager, with his former team-mate Trevor Giles assisting as a selector.

The Meath senior hurlers won the Nicky Rackard Cup title earlier this year and TJ Reilly will remain in situ as their manager.
