Cork beat Wexford in one-sided tie

Cork moved two points clear at the top of Allianz NFL Division 2 by handing Wexford their fifth successive league defeat at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

In front of a poor attendance of 528, Conor Counihan's Munster champions continued their unbeaten run with a comfortable win over relegation-threatened Wexford.

Both of these teams reached the league semi-finals last year but Wexford now seem a shell of their former selves, even with All-Star forward Mattie back in their attack.

Cork lined out without their league top-scorer, Donnacha O'Connor, but they have plenty of firepower up front and defenders Brian O'Regan and Graham Canty also chipped in with points today.

The Rebels had the early wind advantage and moved 1-3 to 0-0 ahead. Centre-forward Paul Kerrigan found the net in the third minute with a stinging, 20-yard shot.

He followed up with an immediate point and finished the first half with a 1-2 tally as Cork turned around with a 1-8 to 0-3 buffer.

Daniel Goulding scored 0-3 in the opening 35 minutes, with Wexford's points coming from Diarmuid Kinsella, with the 14th-minute opener, Shane Cullen and Ciaran Lyng.

The deficit would have been more at the break but for two brilliant saves from Wexford goalkeeper Anthony Masterson, who did well to deny both Fintan Goold and Michael Cussen.

For the neutral, this a was a disappointingly one-sided affair and Cork were able to go 11 points clear, early in the second half, thanks to scores from John Hayes, substitute Kevin O'Sullivan and Canty.

Team captain Canty typified the Cork effort by raiding forward on a superb 70-yard run which ended with him splitting the posts.

Cullen and Lyng responded for the visitors but Cork are clearly in a rich vein of form and while never needing to reach top gear, points from Goulding, Goold, substitute James Masters and Paul O'Flynn capped off a well-merited home win.
