Meath 1-8 Laois 0-6
Meath's full use of a gale force wind advantage in the opening half stood to them well at a blustery Pairc Tailteann as they claimed a five-point Allianz NFL Division 2 win over Laois.
The Royals failed to score in the second half but efforts over the opening 35 minutes were enough to see them take their first win of the 2009 competition.
Aided by a ninth-minute goal from left-half forward Brian Meade, Meath took a 1-8 to 0-1 half-time lead.
Laois' lone score came from the boot of free-taker MJ Tierney five minutes before the interval.
Eamonn O’Brien's charges came up strongly in defence in the second half in a free-flowing and clean encounter that failed to produce a yellow card.
Anthony Moyles and Eoghan Harrington played superbly as part of the full-back line on a terrible night weather-wise at the Navan venue.
Boosted by a forceful wind, Sean Dempsey’s Laois outfit looked odds-on to make a strong second-half comeback.
And although they played admirably, heavy rain prevailed making for a greasy ball and adding to the difficultly as the visitors tried to close the gap.
Tierney edged Laois to within five points of the hosts, before Peadar Byrne had a 64th minute goal chance for Meath.
Byrne's shot was parried away by Laois goalkeeper Michael Nolan who proved to be a safe pair of hands at the back for the visitors.
At the opposite end, Laois continued to pile on huge pressure but they kicked seven wides during the second half and Meath goalkeeper David Gallagher maintained a clean sheet as his side held out for a deserved win.
