Waterford and Sligo take dominant wins
NFL Division 4 round-up:
Waterford 2-20 Kilkenny 0-8
It was a clean sweep for Waterford teams in league action this afternoon with victories for the hurlers and ladies footballers backed up by this impressive 18-point win over Kilkenny in Division 4 of the NFL at Lemybrien.
The hosts signalled their intentions for victory early on with Brian Wall raising the Deise's first green flag inside the opening minute, courtesy of a well-taken finish.
Wall added four points before the break, while a brace of Sean O'Hehir scores ensured the hosts built up a convincing 1-8 to 0-2 half-time lead.
Kilkenny gave a better performance on the restart, scoring six points in the closing 35 minutes.
However, with the likes of substitute Sean Fleming (0-3) impressing for Waterford in the second half, nothing was going to deny the Deise.
The icing was put on the cake with five minutes remaining when Liam O'Lionain rifled home Waterford's second goal to confirm a well-merited success.
Sligo 4-13 Leitrim 1-8
Sligo claimed top spot of Division 4 of the National Football League thanks to an action-packed 14-point win over neighbours Leitrim at Markievicz Park.
It was a disappointing day for the Leitrim defence, who were outclassed by an eager Sligo attack who ran rampant in the second half.
Sligo led by 1-8 to 0-5 at the interval with Adrian Marren providing the lone goal of the opening half.
Kevin Walsh's charges continued to impress in the second period with Kenneth Sweeney adding their second goal. Emlyn Mulligan tried his utmost to keep Leitrim in touch
However, nothing could stop a dominant Sligo who maintained their advantage with Mayo native Alan Costello putting in an eye-catching display
