Cork ease past students

Cork 0-18 UCC 0-08

Cork 0-18 UCC 0-08

Cork have advanced to the final of the McGrath Cup with a comprehensive 10-point victory over the students of UCC at Pairc Uí Rinn.

The scoreline reflected the true gulf in class between the two sides. A largely second-string Cork side advanced to the final to play UL and gave manager Conor Counihan a welcome selection headache with the opening round game of the National League against Meath looming.

Cork flew out the blocks with 4 unanswered points in six minutes from new men Fintan Goold, Paddy Kelly, Kevin O'Sullivan and Conor McCarthy. They added a fifth when Kelly played a lovely cross field past to the onrushing Goold who pointed beautifully.

The students finally raised the white flag in the 14th minute when Daniel O'Shea sent the ball over from 35 yards. Cork would go on another run with a point from Kelly and two from placed balls from the impressive O'Sullivan to make it a seven-point gap. The team then traded scores to end the half at nine points to two.

UCC came out of the blocks quickly in the second half with two straight points from Phillip Corragain and David Goold. Cork stomped out any chance of a come back with scores from Alan O'Connor, another from O'Sullivan and a massive long range point from Fintan Goold.

The game petered out to a close after that with sub Mark Harrington coming to impress with three quick points. Kevin O'Sullivan must surely be in Counihan's plans for the National League plans with his fine haul of five points. The students now turn their attention to the Sigerson cup which will be held on Leeside this year but will need to improve immensely to make the finals weekend. For Cork, its University of Limerick in the final next week and Meath await them in the National League.
