Impressive win for UL against CIT
UL 0-14 CIT 1-8
An impressive final-quarter scoring burst gave UL victory over CIT in the Waterford Crystal Cup at a wet Newtownshandrum today.
When CIT’s Pádraig Gould made it 1-8 to 0-7 for his side in the 45th minute, the Cork college looked in pole position to advance, but UL, inspired by wing-forward Brian Carroll, who scored nine points in all and five in the last 15 minutes, had a stronger finish, to which CIT had no answer.
Up until that stage, the sides had been relatively well matched, with CIT leading 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, all of their points coming from frees by Ryan Clifford, playing on his home pitch.
The first half saw three yellow cards shown, two to UL and one to CIT, with one of the UL subs for those yellows, James Heffernan, shown a red only two minutes after his introduction after he became entangled with CIT’s Peter Downey when a scuffle ensued after the ball dropped in the UL square.
A penalty from Clifford inside two minutes of the second half gave his side a four-point cushion, but they couldn’t pull further away than that as UL managed to stay in touch, before they upped it a gear to claim victory in the closing stages.
