Longford impress against Athlone IT

Longford powered to an eight-point win over the Athlone IT students in front of a large attendance at Ballymahon.

Four yellow cards were produced in a well-contested encounter. A Padraig Shanley goal helped the hosts to a 1-07 to 0-02 interval lead.

Glen Ryan fielded an experimental team, including just three of last year's championship side.

Brian Smith and Trevor Phelan helped bring the students back into contention on the restart, however Longford withstood this comeback well to carve out a thoroughly deserved victory.
