Galway begin title defence with win

Reigning FBD League champions Galway got 2009 off to a positive start with a hard earned win over Sligo at Tourlestrane tonight.

This floodlit encounter drew a large crowd to the Sligo venue, but any hopes for a maiden victory for new manager Kevin Walsh were dispelled by a determined Galway.

Galway led by 0-08 to 0-06 at half-time thanks to the efforts of Nicky Joyce, and although substitute Eamon O'Hara kept Sligo in contention, four second half Joyce points sealed the issue.
