Keoghan resigns as Cavan football manager

Donal Keoghan has stepped down as Cavan senior football manager, following the Breffni men's agonising All-Ireland SFC qualifier exit at the hands of Kildare.

Keoghan, who announced his decision last night, became the third football manager to quit his post in the space of 24 hours after both Luke Dempsey and Colm Coyle ended their reigns with Longford and Meath respectively.

There was heartbreak for Keoghan and his Cavan players at Newbridge on Saturday night when James Kavanagh's 72nd-minute goal gave Kildare a dramatic 1-16 to 1-15 qualifier win.

The Denn clubman, a former Cavan minor manager, was in his second season of a three-year term.

He originally took over the senior reins from Martin McElkennon, but 2008 was an altogether disappointing campaign with relegation from Division 2 of the National League and an unrewarding championship run.
