Luke Dempsey called time on his four-year stint as Longford senior football manager tonight after his team exited the All-Ireland qualifiers with a two-point loss to Laois at Pearse Park.

Despite being happy with the commitment of his players, the Westmeath native felt that it was time to call it a day after he had failed to deliver silverware in 2008.

"I was treated well by the Co Board, but I vowed that if I didn't help to bring home silverware for Longford this year - even the O'Byrne Cup - that I would be leaving after this campaign," Dempsey said.

Dempsey made his announcement to the players in the dressing room following tonight's defeat.
