Championship debutant Emlyn Mulligan tallied up 11 points as Leitrim easily qualified for the Connacht SFC semi-finals tonight.

There was a sizeable attendance at Gaelic Park in the Bronx as New York entertained Leitrim in sunny conditions, with the visitors bringing upwards of 2,000 supporters across the Atlantic.

Mulligan put his stamp all over the game with an excellent display of precision free-taking - he knocked over ten frees and one point from play.

With the wind at their backs, Leitrim raced into an early 0-5 to 0-0 lead and they were 0-10 to 0-3 to the good by the break.

The game was a unique and memorable experience for Drumkeerin's Alan and Michael Foley with the brothers lining up in opposition to each other - Alan at corner back for New York and Michael at corner forward for Leitrim.

New York tried to out-muscle their opponents in the opening half, but they fell foul of referee Paraic Hughes on a number of occasions.

They did begin to settle after they registered their first point, 18 minutes in, through Dan Doona from Kerry.

Two points from Adrian O'Connor and Mark Dobbin helped the Exiles eat into Leitrim's lead around the half-hour mark.

Successive scores from Mulligan (0-2f), Donal Brennan and Michael Duignan gave Leitrim their seven-point advantage at the turnaround however.

New York's discipline continued to let them down in the second period, with Mulligan popping over a number of placed balls and Leitrim's midfield pairing of Duignan and Gary McCloskey really stood out.

Referee Hughes lost patience with the home side and he booked nine New York players before Dermot Keane, the hosts' centre back, was red carded in the dying minutes.

By that stage Leitrim were already contemplating their trip home as they comfortably set up a semi-final clash with either Galway or Roscommon.
