Fourteen-man Westmeath maintained their unbeaten run in Division 2A today thanks to this slender win over Kildare at Cusack Park, Mullingar.

The visitors were simply dire in the opening half, with Brendan Murtagh hitting five frees to ensure Westmeath held a 0-8 to 0-2 lead after 28 minutes.

Yet substitute Brian Smith was dismissed on the restart, and this almost cost Westmeath as Kildare responded strongly.

However, time ran out for Andy Comerford's charges as the two-point loss ensures his side exit the competition.
