Antrim ask clubs to debate grants issue

The Antrim County Committee want their county's clubs to fully debate the issue of inter-county player grants before the Committee hold a meeting on February 19.

The Saffrons' officials met last night and, according to a statement, are eager for "all grass-roots members to be afforded the opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding the Government Grants scheme."

The Antrim Management Committee have "asked that all clubs now give every member the opportunity to have an informed and appropriate debate on this subject," the statement confirmed.

"Given that recent press and media coverage has indicated that many grass-roots members of the Association feel disenfranchised at not being afforded the opportunity to debate and discuss this matter, the Antrim Management Committee have agreed that discussion at County Committee level on this should be delayed until all clubs have consulted with their general membership."

Despite a number of groups being opposed to the Government Grants, the GAA's Central Council is expected to formally adopt the scheme next month.
