Donegal's Campbell calls it a day

Donegal football manager Brian McIver is planning for the 2008 season without Paddy Campbell in mind after the full-back revealed to him that he has played his last inter-county game.

McIver's men begin their competitive season tonight with a Gaelic Life Dr. McKenna Cup Group B encounter with UUJ under the Ballybofey floodlights (throw-in 8pm).

Campbell, 31, had eight years as part of the Donegal senior panel and lined out for a final time in their All-Ireland third round qualifier defeat to Monaghan last July.

The Glenties clubman made his name under Queen's University coach Dessie Ryan and won a Sigerson Cup medal with the Belfast students in 2000.

He is likely to be best remembered as the full-back in Donegal's National League Division One final-winning team of last year.

Meanwhile, two of Campbell's former team-mates, Karl Lacey and Barry Dunnion, will not be facing their native county tonight.

The Donegal defensive pair, two star names in the UUJ squad, are currently nursing injuries.
