O’Connor still Cork’s concern

Jerry O’Connor remains the only injury concern for the Cork hurling management ahead of next Sunday’s Munster semi-final in Thurles.

O’Connor is still troubled by a hamstring injury sustained in the win over Clare but selector Martin Bowen told the Evening Echo newspaper today that he was hopeful that he’ll be OK.

“He is still a concern but there’s still a bit of time in his favour.

“I would remain optimistic that he will be all right.”

The squad trained yesterday morning at Páirc Uí Rinn and will do so again tomorrow night and Thursday night at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Timmy McCarthy, who missed the game against the Banner County but subsequently put in a fabulous performance for his club Castlelyons in the County Championship, is fit and ready again and in serious contention for a starting place after that club outing.

The management are still completely in the dark about their starting 15 because of the ongoing indecision over the four players proposed for suspension in the aftermath of the Clare game.

A decision on their fate was due today but it will be tomorrow morning now before black or white smoke emerges from Croke Park.

There is continuing speculation about what will be the outcome with one school of thought suggesting that two of the four will be available.

Meanwhile, the Cork football squad arrived in La Manga today for a week’s training in advance of the Munster final against Kerry.

Team boss Billy Morgan told the Echo from Spain today that all the squad will be present except for Alan O’Connor who is doing exams.

“We are looking forward to the week here. We were here before and the facilities are absolutely first class.

“The players enjoy the schedule and we’ll be hoping to put in some very good work before the Munster final.”
