Westmeath maintain unbeaten record

Westmeath maintained their 100% record in Division 1B as they held off 14-man Down at Cusack Park by 0-09 to 0-07.

Dessie Dolan struck three frees to help Westmeath to a 0-5 to 0-2 half-time lead, with Paul Bannon and Fergal Wilson also on target.

Wing forward James McGovern bagged Down's early scores before he was sent-off in the 29th-minute for throwing a punch at Bannon.

In front of 3,015 spectators, Down battled on bravely with Aidan Carr notching three points. His 44th-minute score had Down 0-6 to 0-5 behind, but Westmeath rallied with Dolan, Derek Heavin and Denis Glennon raising further white flags.
