Donegal snatch win

Donegal 1-13 Mayo 1-10

Late points from Kevin McMenamin and Colm McFadden saw Donegal beat Connacht champions Mayo in Ballybofey today, as they joined Tyrone at the top of the Division 1A table.

Brendan Devenney and Ciaran Bonner got off the mark early on as the Tir Chonaill men built up a 0-05 to 0-02 lead.

Mayo replied with points from Austin O'Malley (0-02), Conor Mortimer, Andy Moran and Alan Dillon to turn around with a 0-07 to 0-06 buffer.

On 46 minutes, Mayo keeper David Clarke dropped a high ball allowing Ryan Bradley to net.

Mayo levelled when a ball rebounded off Neil Gallagher's shin and into the net but Donegal's late rally saw them record their second win in seven days.

These sides filled the two top places in the division after the opening round and their class told in a bright, open game - Conor Mortimer's ninth-minute point off the outside of his left boot was the pick of the early scores.

McMenamin and Devenney (0-02) helped the home side go 0-03 to 0-01 clear, and while Mortimer added a free to Mayo's tally, Donegal were nosed into a three-point lead by the 20-minute mark.

Exerting just that extra bit of control, Donegal were in cruise control but John O'Mahony's men soon began to click with Billy Joe Padden, Dillon and O'Malley putting in big performances.

Mayo grabbed five of the half's closing six points to take a single-point lead into the second period.

But when Clarke failed to hold a dropping ball from McMenamin, the tie turned back in Donegal's favour as corner forward Bradley was in the right place at the right time to slam home.

That strike put the hosts 1-08 to 0-09 ahead, and while Donegal skipper Gallagher watched on in agony as his own goal played Mayo back into contention, two further McMenamin scores and a free from substitute McFadden saw Brian McIver's men maintain their 100% start to the league.
