Collins chosen as Galway hurling captain

David Collins has described his promotion to the role of Galway captain as "a big honour."

The Liam Mellows clubman, who is still only 22, has been confirmed as skipper of the Tribesmen's senior hurlers for 2007.

New Galway boss Ger Loughnane has obviously been impressed by Collins' leadership qualities, which were so evident in the half-back line when the county reached the 2005 All-Ireland final.

Collins, who works in the Hole In The Wall bar in Galway city, was voted Vodafone Hurler of the Year, two years ago.

Reflecting on his appointment as captain, he said: "The most important thing is to concentrate on hurling but it is a big honour.

"We have trained hard over the past few months and we are looking forward to getting out on the field."

Loughnane's Galway charges begin their National League campaign at home to Antrim on Sunday week.
