Wexford to challenge Cats for Walsh Cup

Laois 1-14 Wexford 2-22

Wexford's good run in the Walsh Cup competition continued at Rathdowney today when they put paid to Laois' hopes of progression to the final thanks to a 2-22 to 1-14 win.

This game, played at Rathdowney, was a very competitive affair, particularly during the opening 35 minutes when the home side looked like continuing their impressive start to their campaign with three early points.

However ,the visitors soon settled and sent over some excellent points. A defence-splitting move saw full forward Pat Doran, son of the great Tony, shoot a great goal. At the interval, the Model men led on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-9.

When James Young drove a close-in free to the Wexford net early in the second half, it looked like a great finish was on the cards. However, the visitors upped their game and when Doran crashed home his second goal the game as a contest was well and truly over.

The winners face Kilkenny, the reigning Walsh Cup champions, in next Sunday's final.
