McCarthy set to name management team
The identity of Gerald McCarthy’s backroom team may be revealed at tomorrow night’s meeting of the Cork County Board.
County Board chairman Mick Dolan told the Evening Echo today that he wasn’t certain whether or not McCarthy was in a position to reveal who his three choices are.
“We’ll wait and see if Gerald has finalised his selection and if we can announce them tomorrow.’’
Speculation is intensifying around the county surrounding the identity of the three and it remains a closely-guarded secret.
The Evening Echo has learned that a former playing partner of his in the ‘70s, Brendan Cummins from Blackrock could be one of his selections. Cummins won an All Ireland medal with Cork in 1976 at centre-forward as well as numerous medals with the Rockies.
Elsewhere, it is almost certain that Erin’s Own will select their secretary and senior team manager Martin Bowen at a meeting tonight.
The Evening Echo believes that the job is Bowen’s if he decides to accept it, which is likely.
Meanwhile, there will be only one contest at this year’s County Board convention and that is for the position of Gaelic Officer. Denis Lyons has served his three years in that role and will be succeeded by either James O’Neill from Castlehaven or Paudie Kelleher from UCC.
The convention will be held this year for the first time ever on a Saturday night, December 9.
