Waterford captain Paul Flynn has failed in his bid to be fit to start Sunday's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final against Tipperary (Croke Park, throw-in 4pm).

The Ballygunner forward will not be risked by manager Justin McCarthy, although he is rated fit enough for a substitute's role. Flynn, 31, is suffering from a thigh muscle injury, which will require surgery at the end of the Déise's championship run.

McCarthy has made two changes in personnel and four positional switches to the side that beat Laois in the qualifiers.

Tom Feeney (shoulder) and Seamus Prendergast (hamstring) have both recovered from injuries for the trip to capital. Feeney returns in a direct swap for Kevin Moran at full-back, with Declan Prendergast reverting from centre-back to right corner-back to fill in for the axed James Murray.

Ken McGrath, a midfielder last time out, will be on duty at centre-back, while Seamus Prendergast comes in at centre-forward, with Shane O'Sullivan dropping back into midfield and Eoin Kelly switching over to left half-forward.

Waterford have reached the All-Ireland's last-four on three occasions since 1998, but have lost on each of the semi-final appearances against Kilkenny (1998 and 2004) and Clare (2002).
