Portumna prevail in AIB CHL

Teenager Joe Canning helped Portumna end their long wait for an AIB All-Ireland Club Hurling title as he hit 1-06 against Newtownshandrum.

The 17-year-old forward bagged a goal and a point by the ninth minute, and played in Niall Hayes for an eighth-minute goal.

Midfielder Jerry O’Connor raced through to net for the Cork side after 21 minutes and close the deficit to 1-03 to 2-03 by half time.

Canning fired over five second half frees to push the Galway outfit clear. Newtown had Cork senior captain Pat Mulcahy sent off for a second bookable offence after 57 minutes.
