Sligo to consider appointing commercial manager

The Sligo County Board are to discuss the possibility of appointing a commercial manager at their next monthly meeting.

The Bunninadden club tabled the proposal at the Annual Convention at the Sligo Park Hotel on December 12, at which it was agreed to refer it back to the County Board.

The proposed commercial manager, a non-member of the County Executive who would be paid directly by the GAA for the first three years of appointment, would deal with all fundraising and sponsorship of the all the Sligo county teams, according to a Bunninadden delegate.

Sligo's Central Council delegate Kieran McDermott said: “There are a lot of commercial managers appointed in Ulster and there is assistance from Croke Park for this kind of thing.

“It is a matter that would best be referred back to the County Board.”

The Sligo County Board was buoyed last week when Mr. John O'Donoghue TD., the Munster for Arts, Sports and Tourism, announced that the county stadium, Markievicz Park, is to receive a National Lottery grant of €400,000 towards its redevelopment.

Currently, concrete terracing and crush barriers are being put in place at the ground for adequate safety and capacity requirements. The new grant will see the north or town end of Markievicz Park, which is entering its fiftieth year, upgraded.

The new terrace will cater for about 20,000 spectators.
