Doherty takes on Roscommon role

Frank Doherty, the man who led Caltra to the AIB All-Ireland club title in 2004, has been appointed as the new manager of the Roscommon Under-21 footballers.

Doherty, who will nominate his own selectors, will assume the role after Kilmore boss Tommy Kenoy decided to rule himself out of contention for the position.

Roscommon will be hoping for a better showing from their Under-21s next season, starting with the upcoming Hastings Cup. Their 2005 side lost 1-11 to 1-17 to Mayo in the Connacht U-21 championship.

New Roscommon senior manager John Maughan welcomed the appointment of Doherty, a man who has been linked with inter-county jobs in Galway and Limerick in the recent past.

Maughan said: "Frank has an excellent track record with teams over the past few years and he is a good appointment for Roscommon football."

Maughan recently named four players eligible for the Under-21 grade in his senior panel for 2006.
