Waterford reappoint McCarthy

Corkman Justin McCarthy was handed another year at the helm of the Waterford senior hurlers last night.

McCarthy, who inspired the Déise to their first Munster title in 39 years back in 2002, was given the vote of confidence at a meeting of Waterford County Board in Lawlor's Hotel, Dungarvan.

Mount Sion's Jim Greene was nominated for the position but McCarthy, 60, was always heavily favoured to stay on. It will be his fifth year in charge and one which the sub-committee who re-appointed him will hope proves more fruitful than 2005.

The Déise reached the All-Ireland quarter finals this past summer courtesy of two qualifier wins over Dublin and Offaly, but in a repeat of the Munster semi-final, Cork were a bridge too far in the last eight - winning 1-18 to 1-13.

Despite rumours that former Waterford county board chairman Paddy Joe Ryan would assume a selector's role for next season, the 2005 selector trio of Nicky Cashin, Seamie Hannon and Kevin Ryan have all agreed to stay on to assist McCarthy.
